PATTERN MIXING: SAME VS. DIFFERENT + LINKUP

Hello Lovelies!

As I’ve probably mentioned in the past, I love pattern mixing. It’s so interesting to take two different sets of colors and shapes and combine them to make a really great outfit.

Tha problem is, what is the best way to tell if patterns go together or not? Well, today I’m going to share some tips of mine on how I like match patterns together, whether they are similar or different.

1. SAME PATTERNS, SAME SIZE – When you mix two patterns together that are the same, to make the outfit atheistically pleasing, the patterns need to be the same size. For instance, if you were to mix two striped pieces together ( like I did ), you want the stripes to be the same size. This way, the outfit looks focused and streamlined. The colors don’t have to be similar ( as mine aren’t ), but the size does.

2. OPPOSITES DO NOT ATTRACT – When you’re working with two different patterns, the rule above doesn’t apply. Now, the eye is having to focus on two different things and it can get tricky. The best thing when mixing two different patterns, is to remember two things – similar colors, different sizes. Take my second outfit: I’ve paired a window pain patterned scarf with floral patterned top. The sizes of the patterns are completely different, but they have similar colors and therefore look like they belong together.

If you remember these simple tips for pattern mixing, you’ll never go wrong! Now go out and buy some pretty, patterned things and mix them up.

  • I think this is great advice! I love mixing different patterns that have similar colors, but I haven’t done a lot of mixing of the same patterns of different sizes. But you’ve shown with the stripes that it can totally work!

    • Yeah, mixing patterns was something I never thought I could do, but once I tried a few times, I loved it! And similar pattern mixing can be tricky, you just have to have the right two. I’ve seen some bloggers who mixed as many as three or four. I haven’t reached that stage yet. Haha!

  • Such cute outfits. Love the first one especially!

  • Love your outfits and pattern mixing tips – thanks for linking up to #AllAboutYou on Mama-andmore.com. Have a great rest of week!
